Until the middle of the 20th century, Šupljak was the most important settlement by Lake Ludaš, since there was a church and a cemetery only here, and the post between Kanjiža and Subotica passed by this area. Growing tobacco was introduced in the surrounding by settlers from Szeged. People are growing tobacco in Šupljak even today, but they prefer the production of other industrial crops (especially garlic), root crops and grain crops on these lands of good-quality black soil. In the background of the relative popularity of garlic production we find the similarity of necessary tools, as well as the possibility of growing it in gardens. Gardeners from Šupljak and the surrounding pusztas have sold their crops mostly in markets in Subotica, but have also brought them to other settlements in Bačka. The lake has always played an important role in the inhabitants’ lives. They have gone there for fishing, cutting bulrush and reed. Reed cutting was called winter harvest or second harvest, due to its yield and the similarity of the working process.
