Sándor Oláh (Magyarcséke, 1886 – Subotica, 1966) was one of the most important painters of the period of the formation of art scene in Subotica, a prominent portrait painter and illustrator, a representative of the late stages of the Art Nouveau and symbolism, teacher of many young artists. He attended the grammar school in Subotica together with József Brenner Jr., later a writer known as Géza Csáth. His first art lessons were gained in Budapest (1905–1908). He was a scholar of the town from 1906. He studied painting at the Art Academy in Munich in the class of Angelo Jank (1908), in parallel with attending Simon Hollósy’s school. He participated in the art colonies of Nagybánya (1909) and Kecskemét (1911, 1912–1914). He taught in the Female High School of Business and Applied Arts (1910). He exhibited on group exhibitions from 1907. He was a member of the board of the Association of Artists of Great Plain (1913), of the art colony in Nagybecskerek (1931) and of the Association of Artists of Vojvodina (1923–1935). He won the Szinyei prize (1934). Between 1924 and 1941, he lived and worked in the town’s art atelier, on the upper floor of the Municipal Mansions. The using of the town’s atelier was repaid over portraying some important figures of Bunjevac revival. The majority of his works is in the Municipal Museum of Subotica, while the Ark from 1906 from the Perčić collection was painted in Senta, two years before his studies in Munich.
